In the midst of an elaborate conspiracy, an expert negotiator is driven to the edge when he's framed for the murder of his partner, as well as embezzling money from his department's pension fund. His only chance to prove his innocence is to take hostages himself, acquire the services of another expert negotiator, and find out who's running the conspiracy before it's too late.
Samuel L. Jackson is Danny Roman, a hot shot police negotiator and the man of the hour in the police department. One day he wakes up to find that he has been set up, and now the police are after him. In his panic, he takes control of a building. Knowing all the rules of negotiation, Danny asks for the only negotiator he can trust - Chris Sabian (Kevin Spacey). When the police get itchy trigger fingers and want to go into the building shooting, Sabian finds that the only way he can save Danny Roman's life is to go in there and become his partner. Now the police have to deal with both of them.
Yes, the plot may be a bit contrived, but it&#39;s presented believably, and that&#39;s what makes or breaks it in my book. If you&#39;re willing to momentarily suspend disbelief and accept that Jackson&#39;s character knows he is being railroaded by a carefully hidden conspiracy that reaches high into the department, then his subsequent actions, while rather extreme, are quite reasonable. If not, well, you should probably watch a different movie, because this one isn&#39;t going to make much sense. :-)<br/><br/>The acting is very good all around, and the ending does keep you guessing as to who the guilty parties really are. It even keeps you hanging about just how far this man might go to prove his innocence, even to the point of committing other crimes. And, of course, there are some gunfights to keep things moving. A well made, intelligent and enjoyable movie.
Okay, so the plot was way over the top, but the script is well written and Samuel Jackson as always delivers a sterling performance. For most of the movie I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat, my popcorn completely forgotten. It has the occasional hard-to-follow plot thread, so you need to be alert (and sober) to reap the full benefit of the movie, but it&#39;s well worth it in the end.
One of the best by-the-numbers thrillers you'll see this year, thanks to a hot-shot cast.
